Reviews of flyer printing
Flyer printing services, and the tools for making a flyer to print
Flyer Printing Reviews reviews and compares the services that print flyers and the design tools used to make one: what each offers in sizes, paper and finish, how it handles a print-ready file, and what quantity and turnaround look like.
- TrimWhere the sheet is cut. The colour band runs past it.
- BleedThe extra edge the printer trims away.
- Safe marginNothing that matters sits outside it.
- StockThe paper the proof will be printed on.
On the desk
A flyer is judged in the hand
A flyer is a small job with little room for error. It is handed over, pinned up or left in a rack, and read in a few seconds. Whether the colour came out as designed, whether the paper feels cheap, whether the edge was cut clean: the reader notices all of it, even without knowing why.
The reviews here cover both halves of that job. One half is the printing service: the sizes it prints, the stock and finish it offers, how it treats the file, and how long an order takes. The other is the design tool where the flyer is laid out and exported before it goes to print.
Where one option suits a job better than another, the review says so in words, with the reason attached.
The questions
What one flyer printer does differently from the next
Every flyer order comes down to the same handful of choices. These are the ones that separate one service from another, and the ones a review of a printer has to answer.
-
Which sizes it prints
A5, A4, DL, US letter or half letter?
Most printers offer the standard sheet sizes and fewer offer the odd ones. A5 (148 × 210 mm) and US letter cover most handed-out flyers; DL (99 × 210 mm) fits a rack or an envelope.
-
What paper it offers
How heavy, and which finish?
Weight decides how the flyer feels in the hand and whether it survives a pocket. Finish decides how colour looks: gloss and silk deepen it, matte and uncoated stock are calmer and easier to write on.
-
One side or two
Is the back printed too?
Double-sided printing gives a flyer room for a map, a menu or a second offer. It usually costs more per sheet, and it means two pages of artwork to get right instead of one.
-
How it handles the file
Bleed, safe margin and a proof?
A print-ready file carries bleed past the trim edge, commonly 3 mm or 1/8 inch, and keeps text inside a safe margin. Printers differ on whether anyone checks the file and whether a proof is offered before the run.
-
Quantity and turnaround
How many, and by when?
The price per flyer usually falls as the quantity rises, and faster turnaround usually costs more. For an event, the date decides the order more than the unit price does.
-
The design side
Where does the flyer get made?
Some printers include a design editor and templates; others expect a finished PDF. A separate design tool can export a print-ready file to any of them.
Two kinds of job
An event flyer and a business flyer ask for different things
The event flyer
Printed for a date, read at a glance, thrown away after the day. The date, the place and one line of why are what it has to carry.
Turnaround matters more than the finest stock, and a lighter paper in a larger run is usually the sensible order.
The business flyer
Kept on a counter, slipped into a bag, read again later. It stands in for the business itself, so the paper and the finish say something about it.
Heavier stock, a considered finish and a printed back are where the money tends to go, often in a smaller run reordered as needed.
The paper is part of the design. A flyer that looks right on screen still has to feel right in the hand.
